the beggar and the bird

To know true power you can neither worship nor rule another

Amber Gabrielle and Natalie Jean-Marain are presenting their form of dance and music through an modern day fable, written by Amber Gabrielle. As choreographer and composer this creative team have cultivated a body-to-voice language which draws upon the range of language possibilities between voice and movement. Through improvisation they have identified a form of story telling which can arise naturally through patterns of vocal play and movement. Impulses are shared and reciprocated in the form of vocal harmonies, distorted sounds, breath and dance.

Synopsis

The Beggar and the Bird is a modern day fable about an Ara, an actress afflicted with a deep malaise. Ara's roles onscreen and offscreen seem meaningless and contrived. Ara begins to see herself as a puppet strung on a high-society network. This inner disquiet begins to arise as wanton behaviour in her public world. Ara teeters on the edge of a new paradigm. Her catalyst, a beggar and her muse, a bird, activate an internal journey. As she searches for magic carried in the bewitching song of the bird, she must confront a beguiling enemy, her own shadow. Ara's fears come alive in an underworld that threatens to dislodge her power as a screen goddesss. But an even greater power awaits her if she can relinquish her control. Only bereft, can she surrender to the voice that calls from within and thereby understand the bird's secret
